Think about the last time you searched for a type of business, such as a bookstore or restaurant, in Google. If you typed in your current city and the term bookstore or restaurant, the result that appeared at the top of the page was a map, followed by listings. As with most things Google, that was no accident.

A Google algorithm update in 2014 placed greater emphasis on sites — the biggest being Yelp — that provide maps and directories. As a result, it makes sense to take steps to ensure your business information is optimized online, especially with Google Maps. As with all Google searches, you want to do everything possible to guarantee your business appears near the top of the results.

Here’s how you can check the status of your business:

  1. Sign Up in Yelp — You can easily grab your business identification in Yelp, which will then let you fill in all the pertinent information, such as location, contact number and email, website address, and so on.
  2. Get Listed on Google Business — Go to Google My Business and follow the directions to register your business. The process is easy and takes about 5 minutes to complete. You’ll want to fill out as much information as possible to ensure your listing is optimized. Google will even send you a postcard to verify your business.
  3. Connect — Whether you start connecting with customers online through social channels or encourage them to leave reviews, you want to try and raise your profile. The more information available about your business online, the greater likelihood it will appear in Google Maps when people search.
